What's New in the 2021 Ford Explorer?

For 2021, Ford has made several updates in multiple Explorer trims. The LT, ST, and Limited versions can now be equipped with a locking cargo organizer, which comes standard in the range-topping Platinum trim. Heated seating now comes as standard issue in the XLT trim, which is also available with a heated steering wheel. The XLT can also be upgraded with the Sport Appearance package, which adds its own interior color scheme as well as Carbonized Gray treatment on the grille and 20-inch aluminum wheels.

On the inside, the Explorer provides an abundance of room for up to seven people, and everyone will enjoy generous shoulder- and legroom. As a fitting family vehicle, the SUV also comes with LATCH car seat connections in the passenger seating to ensure your younger passengers are safely secured. Climbing into the back seats is also easier than ever with the push-button folding middle row. You can opt for the available rear-seat entertainment system to keep your crew occupied over longer rides as well. If you choose the XLT's Sport Appearance bundle, the interior will come in an attractive Light Slate color scheme.

The SUV maintains a calm, quiet ride whether you're cruising over fresh pavement or worn and bumpy roads. If you're seeking a particularly sporty drive, you'll enjoy the ST trim's engaging steering and fine-tuned suspension system. The Explorer comes standard with rear-wheel drive, while all-wheel drive is also available. The standard engine is a 300-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder, which offers quick acceleration from green lights and highway onramps. A 365-horsepower twin-turbocharged V6 comes loaded in the Platinum trim, and a 400-horsepower variation of that V6 can be found under the ST's hood. For an unprecedented balance of power and efficiency, you can also consider the hybrid powertrain option, which generates 318 horsepower while demonstrating reserved fuel economy. A towing package is available for the 2021 model, and when fully equipped for the job, the Explorer can pull up to 5,300 pounds.

An 8-inch touchscreen comes standard with the onboard infotainment system, and the ST and Platinum models can be equipped with a 10.1-inch vertically-oriented screen. Ford offers their SUV with tech tools like voice-activated navigation, smartphone connectivity, and a Wi-Fi hotpot to enhance every ride. You can also keep your passengers safe with available driver assistance features like automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning.

History of the Explorer

In 1991, Ford introduced an entirely new SUV to fill the spot left by the outgoing Bronco II. The debut Explorer was the perfect fit, and its arrival signaled a tremendous first step in a new direction. With some notable design cues taken from the Ranger pickup, the Explorer quickly established itself as a well-rounded sport utility vehicle that could handle both daily driving and long, demanding hauls. Ford completely redesigned the Explorer 10 years later, swapping out the old truck-like frame for a new unibody design. The redesign coincided with a nationwide surge in SUV demand, and the Explorer continues to attract new drivers thanks to its built-in versatility.
